Opal C1 review: Verdict

For $299, I expect better than a webcam that needs an eye prescription and a new set of glasses.

It contains a 7.88mm 4k Sony Sensor with a 78-degree field of view, and an f/1.8 aperture lens, outputting 4k pixel resolution at 60 frames per second.

The Opal C1 only works with Apple computers for now. When connected to a Windows PC you won't be able to access any of its software powered features.

The Opal C1 comes with MicMesh™, an array of beamforming microphones that find and focus on the sound of your voice. And with intelligent noise cancellation, every ding, drop and dog bark is filtered out to get an audio experience that clearly speaks for itself.

Opal is a precious gemstone, like rubies, emeralds or diamonds. Opal is rare, and it is expensive to prospect and mine for. Dozens of miners can work for months, using expensive machinery and spending tens of thousands of dollars on fuel, and between them find only a single fine opal, or perhaps a few.

The most valuable Opal, Black Opal, ranges from $50 per carat to $10,000 per carat. Alternatively, White Opal is relatively common and ranges from $10 per carat to $150. Other opal types, such as fire, red, and blue, fall in the $10 to $500 per carat range.

Opals were once thought to bring their wearers good luck and have been credited with numerous supernatural origins and powers. To ancient Romans, opals were a symbol of hope and love. They gave it the name opalus, which means “precious stone.” Throughout history, many cultures have attributed special powers to opals.

Opals are comprised of hydrated silica and typically contain 6-10% water. They form during the acidic weathering of rocks, or precipitate from water-rich fluids containing silica which fill cracks in rocks.

The Opal C1 camera can work as a standard USB webcam over UVC when connected to an iPad. However, it's important to note that while it might function, it's not fully supported. This means you may encounter some limitations or issues when using the C1 with an iPad.

Does Opal C1 work for Windows? ›

Standard USB Webcam (UVC): The C1 camera can function as a standard USB webcam using the Universal Video Class (UVC) protocol for Windows and Linux. However, this mode is not fully supported, and users might encounter some issues so we do not suggest it.

Turn the camera upside down and using the key provided, attach the mount to the bottom of the C1. Use the cable provided and plug into both the back of your C1 and your computer. Once the camera is mounted to your monitor you can adjust the angle using the hinge in the mount by pulling the camera toward you.

For this variety's value, brightness is more important than body tone and opaque stones are more valuable than transparent black crystal opals. The black opal prices for N1 to N4 stones: 1 to 10 carats: $10 to $16,000 per carat. Over 10 carats: $10 to $20,000 per carat.

Black opal is the most prized opal and may realise prices over AUD $15,000 a carat. Boulder opals also have a dark body tone. White opals have a light body tone and are generally the least valuable form of opal.

White opal has a bodytone of N7-N9 (Shown on the scale below). White opal with noticeable Play Of Color can range from $10.00 USD per carat to over $500.00 per carat. Next is Dark Opal, ranging from N5 to N6 on the chart. The darker bodytone is more rare making the value range from around $30.00 to $4000.00 per carat.
